Help I'm a victim of Identity Theft

If you suspect you have been a victim of identity fraud it is essential that you contact your bank or card company as a first step, measures have been put in place for the bank or card company to have a dedicated reporting facility with the police.  They will contact the police on your behalf and pass them all relevant details.  You will be requested to provide as much information as possible to try and locate the source of the theft.

Depending on how you've discovered your a victim will determine what do to next, however here is our check list of things to do:

Check your credit file
This can be done easily over the internet for free or a very small fee. You will instantly discover any abnormalities.

Notify Royal Mail
if you believe your address is being used for criminal purposes or if you're having items stolen

Report the Crime
Visit your local police station to report the crime or try Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

Change your personal passwords and PINs
Regardless of the crime, it is always recommended to remember your passwords and PIN numbers and never write them down. Never keep your chip and pin together, if you suspect that someone may have access to your details simply contact the card issuer or bank and request that new cards are sent out and a new pin issued.
